Preparation & Seasons

What to Wear

Colors: Earthy neutrals (khaki, tan, olive) only. No black or dark blue (attracts tsetse flies). Daytime: Lightweight, breathable long sleeves and trousers for sun and dust protection. Chilly Mornings/Evenings: A warm fleece or jacket (open vehicles get cold). Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in closed-toe walking shoes or boots. Accessories: Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a lightweight scarf or bandana.

What to Carry

Optics & Tech: High-quality binoculars (8x42 or 10x42), camera with telephoto zoom, extra batteries, and a portable power bank. Health & Comfort: Insect repellent with DEET, personal medications, motion sickness tablets, and rehydration salts. Luggage: Soft-sided duffel bags strictly within bush-flight weight limits (usually 15 kg / 33 lbs total).

Best Seasons

  • June – October (Dry Season / Migration Peak): Serengeti & Tarangire: Optimal wildlife viewing; massive herds congregate along rivers, and dramatic Mara River crossings occur. Ngorongoro: Clear, dry weather and sparse vegetation make spotting wildlife on the crater floor effortless.
  • November – May (Green Season / Calving & Renewal) Serengeti: January to February brings the spectacular calving season and peak predator activity on the southern plains. Ngorongoro & Tarangire: Lush, dramatic landscapes, brilliant birdwatching, and newborn wildlife, with fewer travelers.
